Madeline Ong Jing Wen of Secondary 1A won Asia Sports Stacking Competition in Dec 2011.

She will represent Malaysia at World Sports Stacking Championship to be held in Germany on 12 and 15 April 2012.

Roshan’s top again…

Roshan Singh of Secondary 3 Mozart emerged as the National Age Champion (NAG) for the U16 Boys National Age Group (NAG) 2012.

The NAG was held from 11 to 13 March 2012 at the Olympic Council, Jalan Hang Jebat Kuala Lumpur. It was an intensive 3 days as Roshan faced the best U16 players in the country over 8 rounds, with each game lasting about 3 hours each.

Roshan earned a remarkable 7.5 points out of 8 – and was 1 point ahead from the player who was placed second.

This is Roshan’s second consecutive National title. (He was the U-14 National Junior Champion for NAG 2011)

With this, Roshan will continue to represent Malaysia at all 2012 international tournaments, which include the World Youth Championship in Slovenia, World U16 Olympiad in Turkey (he earned a Bronze medal in 2011), Asian Youth Chess and the annual Malaysia-Singapore match.

Cervical Cancer and Human Papilloma Virus - 14 February 2012

All girls of Key Stage 3 attended a talk by Dr. Alan Teh on cervical cancer and the human papilloma virus.

Dr. Teh gave an outline of the prevalence of the disease in Malaysia and the groups most at risk. He explained the disease progression and how timely intervention can help arrest the progression.

As symptoms are not overtly manifested in the early stage, young adults are advised to take precautions through vaccination to protect against HPV 16 & 18, the two most common types of cancer-causing HPVs, and with pap smear screening when they are older.

The talk provided better understanding of the disease and awareness of the need for early intervention.

Students on Volcanology Tour , 3- 6 February 2012

The Geography Department organized a four-day volcanology study tour to Central and East Java in February.

Students made notes for an assignment on the different types of volcano and how they were formed;

the social, economic and environmental effects volcanoes have on the people and landscape of Java; and how humans impact on and interact with volcanic events.

The students gathered this information using the following geographical techniques:

- Field sketches

- Photography

- Observations of geographical landscapes

- Questioning of local experts (tour guide and museum staff)

The above knowledge and techniques will allow the students to gain a greater understanding of the knowledge required to perform well in the Tectonics unit of their IGCSE and the skills to be practiced in assessment Paper 2 ‘Geographical Skills’.

The tour also aimed to allow students to practice independence and take responsibility for their own learning, as well as giving them experience of the culture in another South East Asian country.

Students on Study Tour – Cultural Heritage of Java

Students went on a study tour to Java from 3 – 6 February 2012 to study the cultural heritage of the world’s most densely populated island.

They visited Borobudur, Prambanan, Mendut and the other temples scattered throughout the Dieang Plateau.

Integrating History and Geography topics, students attended pre-trip lessons on the civilisations which existed in Java during the ninth century. Viewing audio-visual presentations, the on-site visits provided explanations on the construction, functions, collapse and re-discovery of the great architectural monuments in Java.

Delving further into history, the guide explained the consequences of the fall of the Mataram Dynasty, the emergence of the principalities of Jogjakarta and Suryakarta and how Jogjakarta came to be vested the status of special Regency with the Sultan as Governor of the Province. The Kraton and Taman Sari visits were insights into the grandeur of the early empires which ruled in Java.

Dato’ Lee Chong Wei - KDU Education Group Scholarship Presentation Ceremony

There were more than hundred applications from students who applied for the Dato’ Lee Chong Wei KDU Education Group Scholarship 2012. Some were merely a fan of his, some were sports enthusiasts, some were enthusiastic about their dreams and making it real, some wanted to show their inspirational side of story, and some, were students who dare to dream.

However, only ten selected ones received the scholarship. The scholarship presentation ceremony took place at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on 18th January 2012.

Dato’ Lee Chong Wei, the KDU Education Group brand ambassador, has been an inspirational icon to many, despite the age of different generations. He has a huge following of fans and followers. He has been through thick and thin, faced many challenges and obstacles, but his strong spirit and will made him one of many that stood out. Today, he is the World’s number 1 Badminton Player.

About Dato’ Lee Chong Wei - KDU Education Group Scholarship 2012:

The scholarships are awarded to applicants who are able to demonstrate their determination to achieve their dreams. The scholarship covers the tuition fee as well as the registration fee for the entire duration of the programme offered. Upon announcement of the scholarship, applicants send in a personal statement to demonstrate his/her determination and perseverance to realize his/her potential. Applicants with the most inspirational personal statement will be short-listed for an interview with the scholarship committee.

“I’d like to start by congratulating Dato’ Lee on his superb start to 2012 by winning the Korea open and Malaysia Open Championships consecutively! Let’s give him a big hand! This scholarship was mooted with the intention to motivate students to set challenging personal goals for themselves and to work hard towards achieving these goals. This scholarship is different from other scholarships in that it is not an academic scholarship - nor a sports scholarship - nor a scholarship for needy students.”

Datin’ Teh Geok Lian (CEO, KDU Education Group) continued,

“To those who have not been selected, I urge them not to give up on their dream.Among today’s scholarship winners, we have those who aspire to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, chefs and both national and international sportsmen. All of them come from different backgrounds, but what they all have in common is that all of them ‘dare to dream’ and ‘dare to achieve’. Thank you everyone for being here today to support our educational aspirations and nation-building initiative. We will now continue with the scholarship presentation,” Datin Teh said during her speech.
Ten deserving students were chosen after the selection rounds and interviews. These students are students who dare to dream and has successfully demonstrated their will, determination and drive to achieve their ambitions.

The scholarship certificate was presented by Dato’ Teo Chiang Quan (Executive Chairman, KDU University College) and Dato’ Lee Chong Wei.

Ong Ee Fen - Represents Malaysia in the World Schools Debating Championship

Ong Ee Fen of S4 has been selected to represent Malaysia in the World Schools Debating Championship which will be held in South Africa in January 2012.

She is one of 5 students selected from government, private and international schools in Malaysia.

The selection process included workshops and many rounds of eliminations from an initial list of more than 60 shortlisted students.

A very elite group.
