Sri KDU® donate bikes for independent living
October 24, 2008 on 8:56 pm | In Secondary School | No Comments
For two young men, Marry Franchis and Honasekaran, 21 October 2008 will be a day they will always remember. On that fine morning they were the recipients of motorbikes sponsored by the Reaching Out Club of Sri KDU® Secondary School, to give them a new lease of life. These were no ordinary bikes – they were Honda EX-5 motorbikes modified for the use of the disabled and a symbol of love and friendship.
Marry and Honasekaran are members of the Independent Living and Training Centre (ILTC), a centre formed to change the way people with disability view themselves, and the way in which service delivery systems in the community respond to their needs.Honasekaran (20) was involved in an accident when he was riding his motocycle four years ago. The accident left him paralysed from the waist
downwards. Marry Franchis (28), was born with cerebral palsy and is also a paraplegic. What is admirable about these young men is their courage to face the challenges of life. They are determined to be independent despite their disability. They needed a vehicle to be more mobile as public transportation for the disabled is almost non-existent in Malaysia. In a voice choked with emotion, Marry, who was lost for words could only say, “Today I am very happy because I have a new bike. Thank you, Sri KDU.” Honeskaran was overjoyed and eased himself on the new bike.

Through a chance meeting with the founder of ILTC, the Reaching Out Club of Sri KDU® Secondary School conceptualised the idea of raising funds to purchase two motorbikes to set Marry and Honasekaran on the road to independent living.
“Over six months, enthusiastic members engaged themselves in activities to raise RM11,500 to buy two bikes. Parents, staff and students did their bit to make this commitment a reality in October. The bikes were modified to disabled-friendly vehicles and sent to PUSPAKOM for inspection and approval.“Marry and Honasekaran have plans to start a small business. They realise that the way forward now is to take more control of their lives with respect and dignity. They have resolved to maximise their level of independence to achieve their full potential. Sri KDU Reaching Out Club is proud to have given them that impetus,” said Muhammad Azhar, the teacher advisor of the Reaching Out Club.
