Sri KDU Debate Union at Two National Tournaments
The Sri KDU Debate Union participated in two national tournaments: the KDU Interschool Debating British Parliamentary 2017 (KIDSBP) and the Asian Pacific University Novice Championships (APU Novice).
The KDU Interschool Debating British Parliamentary 2017 tournament took place at KDU University College in Glenmarie. In a tournament of about 150 teams, Sri KDU dominated the tournament with a total of 15 teams of students from both Sri KDU Secondary School and Sri KDU International School.
The tournament included themes such as Transfomasi Nasional 50, which is “an initiative to plan for the future of Malaysia during the period 2020 to 2050”. This gave the debaters a chance to research and discusses topics close to the Malaysian heart. Following a tough debate, three teams continued and ended as quarter-finalists.
At the APU Novice Championships which were held at Asian Pacific University, the Sri KDU Debate Union sent 7 teams and 7 adjudicators to participate. As it was a university and college debate tournament, our students were discussing many important global issues such as Trump’s declaration of continuous American military presence in Afghanistan as well as social issues such as the pros and cons of gender neutralised media targeting young children.
Two teams made it to quarterfinals while Ilyas Aqil from Sri KDU International School and Gan Jia Yi from Sri KDU Secondary School were awarded 9th and 10th Best Speaker respectively.
The teams put in great effort and gained invaluable knowledge on current issues at both events.
Well done, everyone!
