Karnival Bakat PELAPIS

Continuing to excel in Athletics, Helena Low Weng Yan (9 Delta) won a Bronze medal in the in the Karnival Bakat PELAPIS organized by the National Sports Council of Malaysia. She competed against 64 athletes from 13 states and the Federal Territory at the University of Science, Malaysia’s (USM) stadium in Penang on 16th-17th August 2016.
 
At the team level, Helena represented Selangor and participated in the Hexathlon, which is a combination of six events, namely the 100 metres, long jump, high jump, shot put, 100 metres hurdles and 800 metres over two days of competition. Points accumulated for all the six events determine the placing for overall individual and team. Her group of four girls did well in most events, accumulating a sum total of 13,100 and achieved the Silver for Selangor.
 
The breakdown of the scores is as follows:
 
Individual
Gold: Nurul Fatihah (Terengganu) - 4,030 points;
Silver: Nurul Syafiqah (Kuala Lumpur) - 3,730 points;
Bronze: Helena Low (Selangor) - 3,710 points.
 
Team
Gold: Kuala Lumpur - 13,250 points;
Silver: Selangor - 13,100 points;
Bronze: Johor - 12,760 points.
 
Helena performed equally well in the Selangor Open 2016 held at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) in Bangi on the 27th and 28th of August 2016. She represented the Petaling Jaya City Council (or Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya) and participated in the 100 metres and long jump events. Open to all individuals without age limit, there were participants from sports schools, the army and air force, state athletes, police, college teams and the Malaysia Athletics Federation (MAF or Kesatuan Olahraga Malaysia).
 
Being one of the youngest participants in this track and field competition, she came in fourth place for the 100 metres. For the long jump, she took home the Bronze after achieving a new personal best record with a distance of 4.69 metres. The Silver and Gold went to a former MSSM long jumper (4.84 metres) and an MAF athlete (5.31 metres) respectively.
