Debate Union Competitions
SKIS students take part in Debate Union competitions in joint teams with students from SSKDU and they achieved some considerable successes over the holidays.
Students took part in the HELP University National English Debate Competition from the 26th to 28th of August. The following SKIS students were part of the four teams who were sent to the event:
Lum Tjun Yi (10 Kappa)
Ilyas Aqil Bin Shahril Ridza (9 Delta)
Kelly Pua (10 Kappa)
Chin Jia Hang (10 Eta)
Ho Ka Ting (10 Lambda)
Tan Sein Jone (11 Delta, a new transfer student to SKIS this academic year)
One team (Jia Hang's and Sein Jone's team) made it to the finals, where they received a runner up trophy. In addition, three of our debaters were part of the top ten best speakers at HELP. Sein Jone, Tjun Yi and Ilyas received 3rd, and tied 9th places respectively.
At the beginning of the summer break, the club also participated in another competition, KDU Inter-school Debates British Parliamentary (KidsBP) held from the 29th to 31st July. 7 teams were inclusive of SKIS members. The following SKIS students participated in this event:
1. Ji Fanq Qing
2. Lum Tjun Yi
3. Kelly Pua
4. Ethan Ong
5. Jerric Chong
6. Lum Tjun Mun
7. Chin Jia Hang
8. Megan Yap
9. Michael Yap
10. Michael Kim
11. Tan Sein Jone
Kelly’s team and Sein Jone's team managed to make it to the quarter finals while Tjun Yi and Fang Qing (who went as a team) managed to make it to the semi-finals in the open category.
Both the Michaels, who went as a team, managed to reach the novice finals, where they achieved third place and received a 30% scholarship for KDU College.
Both these tournaments are recognised nationally as highly competitive events; they were attended by members who were once part of Malaysia's National Debating team. Although the students did not manage to win it was a good effort and a great showcase of critical thinking and debating skills developed at SKIS.
