Key Stage 1 Overview
All stages of a child’s education are important but during KS1 (Years 1 and 2, ages 5 - 7), many new skills are established. We therefore use a variety of teaching approaches at SKIPS and aim to make our teaching of Reading, Writing, Spoken Language, Maths and Science, rigorous and challenging for all children no matter what their individual stage.
All children follow ‘Floppy’ phonics and use the online ‘Reading Eggs’ programme with additional reading activities that support individual progress. Children are assessed regularly and helped to become increasingly aware of what they need to do to progress to the next stage in their learning.
Together with rigorous teaching of basic skills, a topic-based inquiry approach is used to link the various areas of the curriculum and provide relevance and interest. This helps children to develop their thinking skills and encourages them to function increasingly independently, preparing them as lifelong learners for a rapidly changing world.
