21st century skills are a set of abilities, which children need to develop in order to succeed in this information age. In order to prepare them for the future, we need to come up with a structured and systematic approach to educate and equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to adapt to the constant changing education landscape, and to solve the ever-evolving demands of modern life.
Essentially, STREAM education came into being in the wake of STEM and STEAM education. Emphasis on literacy is made an important component of science, engineering, and technical education, with the aim of enabling high-quality professionals to write reports, experiment materials and communicate with others.
STREAM education in Sri KDU Primary School includes collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking, thus promoting 21st century skills. This approach allows our children to apply their learning in real life situations. It also aims to hone our children to become equipped as future leaders and critical thinkers.
The school’s two-phase programme will expose children to the basics in a structured and logical approach. They learn soft skills in the first phase where results will definitely not be seen in the short term. The second phase is where the children are introduced to problem-based, inquiry-based and experiential learning of which they will practice the skills through Project-Based Learning (PBL).
The first phase will have computational thinking (logical thinking) and design thinking skills. The second phase we will incorporate STREAM education components as PBL using guided problem-based, inquiry based and experiential learning methods.
