Mandarin is a compulsory subject from Secondary 1 – 3 and is taught at Basic, Intermediate and Advanced learners levels.
At Basic and Intermediate levels, the Mandarin syllabus aims to help the students establish a solid foundation of vocabulary, knowledge of Chinese and communication skills through natural and gradual integration of language, content and cultural elements. This syllabus adopts a holistic approach and is designed to emphasise the development of communication skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
At Advanced level, the Mandarin syllabus aims to develop learners' ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively. The syllabus covers Practical Writing, Continuous Writing, Modern Text Comprehension, Classical Text Comprehension and Idioms. Learners are also encouraged to read widely, both for their own enjoyment and in order to develop an appreciation of how writers achieve their effects. The syllabus also complements other areas of study by encouraging exploration of skills in other general applications.
